Final LJ - Save Earth

Since the beginning, I had a strong idea of what sustainability and technology are. However, once I started to research more in-depth about how our planet is suffering to supply the unlimited wants of society, I felt disgusted with human behavior. What makes me so disgusted is that the keyword “want”, not need. People are so fixated on buying things to fill their void, that they are completely clueless of what can truly give them happiness. And what happens to all the garbage they bought? Soon enough it becomes obsolete, the void widens, and they are out shopping again. Is it ever going to stop?

To make it worse, what do a lot of people do with their garbage? They throw their garbage on the streets, litter out of their cars, don’t recycle, don’t compost, they don’t reuse, just because there is no consequence, no reprehension, thus there is no care.  And, instead of people have a complete sense of urgency on this issue and attempt to change, they keep on living their lives like nothing truly matters. Even our President thinks that it is a hoax. No wonder we are not happy.

I changed a lot since the beginning of this class. I started to compost, I am only buying what I extremely need. I even ask myself a few questions before buying anything: Do I need this? How is it going to benefit my life? Can it wait? What is the real cost of this product? This last question is one of the most important for me now. We are so blind by how affordable something can be, that we forget to remember that someone or something else is paying for that to be affordable to us. And if you haven’t figured by now, most of the time, the biggest stakeholder is our environment.

It is time to wake up and live with mindfully of the planet we got. There is only one like in the entire galaxy! No other place will ever feel or be like home. Save Planet Earth.

I will end my learning journey with this Epic Message:

  1. People are hard to understand. We talk about saving our planet, but then continue to do multiple things that destroy it. Our behaviors are selfish. I am glad that you are taking the steps personally, but also at your jobs and the kids you work with. You took your ideas to the capital and had the senator sign a pledge. Hopefully he wants to change his ways too with plastic and waste.

This class seems like it has made you look differently and deeper into something you already had passion for. Keep up all the hard work and advancement towards a cleaner planet. I like your video. Crazy with his fact if you break up our time we have only been on this planet for 3 seconds. I had that recognization a few months ago when I went to the red woods. There was a tree cut down with a timeline of what happened with that ring of time. The start of the U.S. was almost to the bark of this large tree that was wider than I am tall (5'9) . We are only here for a limited time and look at the damage we are doing. Great post. It was nice to meet you and work with you. Keep up the good work.

  2. Peter, I really enjoyed your final blog post. I feel like you were able to make your points very clear and provide facts with a basis of education. You seem very passionate about these issues which is very admirable and I could not agree with you more. As humans, we are so focused on the next best thing--clothes, shoes, cars, houses, etc. When the next best item comes out, we throw away the old one even if there was nothing wrong with it. As you mentioned this will never fill the a void that people are experiencing. True happiness comes from the 5 things Nic mentions in his TED talk: investing time and energy with loved ones, being active and getting outside, taking notice of things around us, continue to learn and be curious, and give.

There is a lot that needs to change and a lot of education that needs to be done. However, you are taking things into your own hands and are an example to other individuals which is great--continue doing that!

  3. Throughout this semester I could tell you had a great knowledge base and passion for sustainability, all of your posts incorporated things you have done in your life or would like to do to become more sustainable. You speak with words that show your interest in sustainability and I think you would be a great person to be able to enact change on your community and further as opportunities present. I love the video you end with, this planet is ours and we need it for survival, this is not just something we want but people are acting as if they want to live not need to live. Great posts throughout this semester, I always enjoyed reading your posts.

  4. Sustainability and technology have so many definitions. I think your posts have covered so much good information. You seem to put yourself into everything you do. We can’t save the word by ourselves, but I think you have a great start. Your passion shows in your work. You will go far in the life and make a difference.
